In three weeks, Amogh Sahu (who facilitated last year’s hugely successful course on “The Value of Objectivity”) will begin his new course on “The Life of the Mind”. There are still a few places left, so click the link at the bottom of this newsletter and sign up today!
Group Overview:
What is thinking? What is it to think well? What conditions do we need, or what strategies might we employ, to be good thinkers? Why might we believe it is important to think well?
In this seven-week course, we will consider such questions by doing a comparative reading of two books: The Intellectual Life by A.G. Sertillanges and Lost in Thought by Zena Hitz. Though these books are from different periods - Sertillanges was writing in the 1920s, while Hitz’s book was released in 2020 - they both give us a useful framework through which to consider these issues. Along the way, we will juxtapose each author’s views with short extracts from other thinkers such as James Baldwin, Kwasi Wiredu, Leo Strauss, Judith Butler, Audre Lorde, Theodor Adorno, and Friedrich Nietzsche. No previous knowledge of philosophy is required.
