New Essay, New Print Issue, No Event
Ellie Robson on 'Mary Midgley and public philosophy'; Elizabeth Anderson on the dangers of polarization; print issue out now
Dear all,
We have no events this week, but still lots going on!
As you may recall, Ellie Robson recently wrote a super essay for us on the topic of Mary Midgley and public philosophy. It was great to hear Ellie discussing this essay on one of our favourite podcasts, The Philosopher’s Zone. You can listen to the episode here.
Your Sunday Read
“Polarization and Talking Across Difference”: Elizabeth Anderson in conversation with Alexis Papazoglou
This conversation with renowned political philosopher Elizabeth Anderson asks what it means to be a democratic citizen in a time when we find ourselves divided not only over values, but over facts. As lies, propaganda and fake news have hijacked political discourse on polarizing issues and distracted the electorate from constructive engagement of the problems we face, Anderson looks to thinkers like John Dewey and Susan Neiman in order to reframe democracy as a kind of culture that must be kept alive through civil society. You can read the conversation here.
New print issue and related events!
Our new print issue on “Punishment” is published tomorrow! Very exciting. You can buy a copy here (and all out back catalogue is 40% off as well). Also, we will be having three events in one day (that’s right, three!) on Tuesday April 23rd to celebrate the publication. These events will all feature contributors to the new issue — Henrique Carvalho, Anastasia Chamberlen, Omid Tofighian, Elahe Zivardar, and Luke Russell. While only one event listing is online so far, check out the poster below for event times and more.

Ending
The Philosopher is unfunded and relies on your support to keep doing the work we do. It is a constant struggle to break even and requires an immense amount of hard work - almost all of it unpaid.
You can offer a donation, join us via Patreon, or become a print or digital subscriber. All support is greatly appreciated!
Wishing you all a lovely Sunday, wherever you are!
