New Series of Events Starts Today!
Three events this week, a new essay online, and a writing opportunity
Dear all,
Just a quick newsletter today: 1) This week’s three events, 2) A newly uploaded review, and 3) A writing opportunity.
Events
Our winter series of digital events begins today at 2pm EST/7pm UK. Costica Bradatan has just released a really exciting new book called In Praise of Failure: Four Lessons in Humility. I have been looking forward to this book for ages now since reading Bradatan’s short essay on this topic several years back. He is joined by the always brilliant Robert Zaretsky. This event is free and open to everyone. You can find out more and sign up for it here.
Our winter series has a running thread of looking at some of the forms of suffering we face in our lives. Following today’s event on failure, we are back tomorrow with an event on “Grief Worlds”. What is it to experience grief and what does this tell us about human emotional life? Matthew Ratcliffe has been a great inspiration to me this past decade. I attended many of his conferences back when he was at Durham University. His work is rooted in phenomenology and he explores difficult and often disturbing aspects of human existence with sensitivity and clarity. He is joined by another great scholar of the emotions, Kathleen Higgins. You can find out more and sign up for it here.
N.B. This event will begin 30 minutes earlier than normal at 6.30pm UK/1.30pm EST.
While we normally only have one event a week, we are opening the new series with an extravagant three events! The final one on Wednesday promises to be very special. Renowned philosopher of violence Brad Evans will be opening his mini-series “A Century of Violence” by discussing Paulo Freire’s 1970 Pedagogy of the Oppressed with Henry A. Giroux. You can find out more and sign up for it here. And here is the poster for Brad’s series:
New Online
We have just uploaded a review of Costica Bradatan’s In Praise of Failure by Alexandre Leskanich. Well, it’s not exactly a review. More of an essay on failure framed around some general themes in Bradatan’s book. Alex is a wonderful stylist and I consider this to be the best piece of writing he has published to date. I am delighted that he continues to write for us and you can look forward to a new review from him in our next print issue.
Get Involved!
Our main email of the week is normally sent out on Sundays (I just got back from holiday so we missed it this week!). The final section will be “Reflections”. Would you like to contribute to the “Reflections” section? Are you reading a philosophy book you would like to write about? Are you running a philosophy group you would like to discuss? Are you grappling with a particular philosophical problem at the moment? Have you found ways of bringing philosophy into your day-to-day life? Please send us around 250 words on these kinds of topics and we will do our best to publish them.
Just email them to us at: thephilosopher1923@gmail.com
Thanks as always for taking the time to read this. Public comments always welcome below or private ones sent to the email address above.
Best wishes,
