Philosophy of Nothing; Arguing for a Better World
An essay by Karmen MacKendrick and listing for opening event on 4th September!
Dear all,
Our new events series begins a week tomorrow. The first event will take place at 7pm UK time on Monday 4th September. It will feature Arianne Shahvisi talking about her new book, Arguing for a Better World, with Andrés Saenz de Sicilia. The listing for the event is now online. It would be great if you can join us! All being well, the full line-up and poster for the new series will be posted this time next week.
Also, just to let you know that from September 6th until the end of the year, we will be posting an additional essay every second Wednesday.
Your Sunday Read
“But First, Nothing” by Karmen MacKendrick. Some of you will remember the “Nothing” issue from early 2021. Not only did it feature some of our best essays to date, but it was through this issue that the ongoing collaboration with our awesome art consultant, Joanna Borkowska, began. As always when posting new contributions from that issue, Joanna’s artwork is front and centre. This essay from philosopher of religion Karmen MacKendrick takes us on a breathless journey from Leibniz to Heidegger via Aquinas, Milton, medieval Jewish Kabbalah, and process, feminist, liberation, and ecological theologies - all in an attempt to address the question, “Why is there something rather than nothing?” You can read Karmen’s essay here.
