Public Philosophy: A Democratic Approach; no event this week
An essay by Jonathon Hawkins and Peter West from our new issue
Dear all,
Our speaker for Monday’s event is poorly, so there will be no event this week. No other news comes to mind, so let’s crack on.
Your Sunday Read
“A Democratic Approach to Public Philosophy” by Jonathon Hawkins and Peter West.
If academics want to increase uptake, interest, and funding, it seems plausible to suggest they must do something that is publicly interesting.
In this lead essay from our latest issue, guest editors Jonathon Hawkins and Peter West offer some reflections on a survey they put out in 2022 in the hope of eliciting views from ‘the public’ on issues relating to the nature and aims of both philosophy (more generally) and public philosophy. Their aim was to take a ‘democratic’ approach to answering the question, What is public philosophy? Within two weeks, we received over 170 responses. Read their essay here to find out more.
