Rituals of Disappearance; no event this week; Ask The Philosopher on Tuesday
An essay by Roddy Brett from our "Violence" issue
Dear all,
Just to note that there will be no event this week, but our current season of events will conclude next week with Shannon Vallor discussing “How to Reclaim Our Humanity in an Age of Machine Thinking” on Monday 30th June and Sasha Mudd asking “Are Progressives to Blame for Trump’s Attack on Universities?” on Tuesday 1st July - see here and here for more information/registration.
This is also Anthony’s final week as part of The Philosopher after seven years. He will offer a brief goodbye in next Sunday’s newsletter. In the meantime, if you want to wave him off, you can join the “Ask The Philosopher” group on Tuesday, as he is hosting it (more on this below).
Your Sunday Read
“Rituals of Disappearance”
by Roddy Brett
Roddy Brett explores the haunting legacy of enforced disappearance as a tool of political violence, particularly in Latin America. He examines the psychological and societal impacts on the families of the disappeared, delving into their daily rituals of hope and despair. By analyzing the intersection of state terror, genocide, and the denial of bodies, he calls for a deeper understanding of the human dimensions of disappearance and a more critical engagement with this crime against humanity. You can read the essay here.
Ask The Philosopher
Registration is now open for this month’s “Ask The Philosopher” session, which will take place on Tuesday (24th June) at 10am PT/1pm ET/6pm UK / 7pm CET for 90 minutes via Zoom.
Anthony will be hosting, with Johanna Fisher, Michael Bavidge, and Tara Needham as panelists. As Anthony is stepping back from The Philosopher at the end this week, this will be his last “public appearance” as a member of The Philosopher team, so come along, say goodbye, chat some philosophy etc. You can register here.
If you are attending, it would be really helpful if you can submit a question in advance. If you wish to do so, please reply to this post or email thephilosopher1923@gmail.com
