An interview with Paul C. Taylor; recording of conversation between Lyndsey Stonebridge and Samantha Rose Hill
Dear all,
We have a short and sweet newsletter for you this Sunday. As a reminder, there are no online events this week. We’ll be back up and running with events starting March 18th. For now, you can check out today’s Sunday Read, along with a recording of last Thursday’s in-person event, below.
Your Sunday Read
“Post-Post-Racialism: or the Evolution of Race-Thinking”: A conversation between Paul C. Taylor and Adam Ferner
Paul C. Taylor is the W. Alton Jones Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University. His publications include On Obama (2015) and Black is Beautiful: A Philosophy of Black Aesthetics (2016).
This fascinating interview is centered around the publication of the third edition of Taylor’s book, Race: A Philosophical Introduction. Taylor notes that with each new edition, the content of the work hasn’t changed much; rather, the overall point is to bear out a thought that was controversial in the late twentieth century, but much less so now: that race is dynamic and mutable and all-provisional and all-contingent. In this wide-ranging conversation, Taylor Obama, racial realism, Afropessimism, as well as some of the challenges surrounding race theory today. Ultimately, Taylor defends a pragmatist approach to the topic, noting that the only way to engage with it responsibly is to deal with facts on the ground, and with cases in light of the best information you can gather. You can read the conversation here and check out Taylor’s book here.
