"On Being a Loser": a conversation with psychoanalyst and literary theorist Josh Cohen
Time = 11.30am PDT/2.30pm EDT/7.30pm UK (N.B. 30 mins later than normal!)
“On Being a Loser”: You are a loser. For psychoanalysis, this isn’t a personal slight, but an impersonal truth. So why have we come to fear losing?
“Loser” was Donald Trump’s favourite insult (within a hotly contested field). But while progressives disdain his divisive politics, they have mostly failed to challenge meritocratic values that divide society into winners and losers. How might we truly escape our toxic political culture?
This event with renowned psychoanalyst and cultural critic, Josh Cohen, will explore truth, lies, violence, populism, vulnerability, humility, humiliation, positive thinking, and consolation in an attempt to diagnose a variety of social pathologies and usher us into an art of losing. I love this. I have always embraced a loser identity. I have to read this book and see if what he says about being a loser is what I have worked out. The advantages to me of shooting for ‘loser’ have been many. I keep trying to explain this strategy to people, and they just don’t get it so maybe this book can help.
