“The Value of Philosophy in a Market-Driven World” by Hossein Dabbagh
As Hossein Dabbagh notes in this essay, the closure of Kent University’s philosophy department last month “exemplifies the increasing commodification of education and raises questions about the role of higher education in fostering an essential understanding of human existence and societal structures”. Dabbagh goes on to defend the numerous important skills that can be developed through an education in philosophy, from critical thinking and ethical reasoning to the pursuit of social justice and the cultivation of a global perspective. In the face of the increasing commodification of higher education, Dabbagh concludes that “education, at its core, is about broadening horizons, cultivating critical minds, and encouraging a sense of moral responsibility – qualities that are indispensable for the progress and well-being of society”.
